Egbert Marsh Beard, of Cumberland County, NC, died October 24, 1887. A Civil War veteran, he enlisted with Company D, North Carolina 53rd Infantry on October 11, 1862 in Bladen County, NC. He married Harriet McDonald August 28, 1857 in Cumberland County, NC. At his death he was buried in a private cemetery in a field off County Line Road & Meriweather Drive in Fayetteville, NC. His family has requested his remains be moved to St. Pauls Presbyterian Church Cemetery, St. Pauls, NC where he will be re-interred with his wife and children. Great grandchildren involved in the relocation include Dwight Hedgepeth, Flora Jane Hedgepeth Davis, Marc Hedgepeth, Wade Hedgepeth, Miriam Penfield and Joanne Penfield Jackson. Mr. Beard has 5 generations of descendants spread across the United States. A graveside committal service will be held Friday December 9, 2016 at 12:00 noon in St. Pauls Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Reverend David Canady officiating. Special military honors will be provided by Robeson Rifle Guards Camp 216, Sons of Confederate Veterans, Brian Woody, Camp Commander. A special thank you for assisting with this memorial endeavor is made to Robeson County Commissioner Lance Herndon and the Robeson County Board of County Commissioners, Cumberland County Board of County Commissioners, Charles Gardner, Attorney at Law, Butler Funeral Home of Roseboro, researcher Steve Sutton, Mr. David Sampson, Robeson Rifle Guards Camp 216, and the descendants of Mr. Beard.
