Joseph Barnhill, Jr

Joseph Manning Barnhill, Jr., 63, of Parkton died Saturday July 10, 2021 at his home. He was born in Bexar, Texas (Ft. Bliss) on October 11, 1957 to Joseph Manning Barnhill, Sr. and the late Elsie Lee McRainey Barnhill. Graduating from St. Pauls High School in 1975, his first job was with Brown’s Hardware in Red Springs. He followed that by serving as the manager who opened St. Pauls Hardee’s. Joe then went to work for Leon Sugar’s Men’s Shop in Fayetteville, which led him to Joe Sugar’s Big and Tall Men’s Store in St. Pauls, where he stayed for over 25 years. After his retirement from Joe Sugar’s he went to work for McNeill Mackie Funeral Home, where he worked at the time of his death. He was a person of great faith, being baptized at Green Springs Baptist Church. Later in life he joined St. Pauls Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder. He attended services at Parkton Presbyterian Church for the past several years. He served in many capacities in the St. Pauls Masonic Lodge #474, including Past Master. Joe was involved with Sudan Shriners, as a Past President and long-time Treasurer of the St. Pauls Shrine Club. He was active in the York Rite and a Past Worthy Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 70 (OES). He was involved in farming and was always concerned about the farmers in our area. He was very involved in community activities such as the NC Folk Arts Festival and Night Out. Joe loved window shopping on car lots and just looking at cars. He loved travelling and planned several “get away” trips though out the year. Preceded in death by his mother, Elsie Lee McRainey Barnhill and brother Eddie Pace Barnhill, he is survived by his father, Joseph Manning Barnhill, Sr. and his wife Joann; step-brother, Alan Barnhill; step-sisters, Janine Hepler and Jennifer Byrd; God-daughters, Jamie Nicole Carter, Kaileigh Lauren Carter and Briley Humphrey; and many cousins and friends.

A visitation is scheduled for Thursday July 15, 2021 from 10:00 - 11:00 am at Green Springs Baptist Church, 1095 E. Green Springs Road, Parkton, NC 28371, with a funeral service scheduled at 11:00 am, also at the church. Pastors Steven Kirk and David Hodge will be officiating. Burial with Masonic Rites will follow in the church cemetery. The family is being served by McNeill Mackie Funeral Home of St. Pauls.
