Mary Catherine McCormick Houck, 96, a resident of Wesley Pines, Lumberton, NC, passed away on February 16, 2021, at UNC Health Southeastern Hospital. She was known as “Ki” to her close family members.
She was the daughter of the late Angus Archibald and Mary McLean McCormick of Saint Pauls, NC.
She was a graduate of Flora McDonald College in Red Springs and received a graduate degree from the Assembly’s Training School in Richmond, VA. She served several churches in North Carolina and worked in Fayetteville Presbytery as the director of Christian Education. She also was an English teacher at Saint Pauls High School for a brief time.
She was married to a Presbyterian Minister, the late George Foyle Houck. They retired in Saint Pauls. She was active in the Saint Pauls Presbyterian Church as a Sunday School teacher and as Women of the Church historian. She remained active in the Saint Pauls Presbyterian Church after moving to the Wesley Pines retirement community in 2000.
One of her interests was history and she presented some of her findings at the Duncan McNair Memorial Festival in Rennert, NC, as she was a direct descendent of Duncan McNair, one of the founders of Saint Pauls Presbyterian Church and the town of Saint Pauls. She was a great collector of family history.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, William N. McCormick, of Saint Pauls and Angus A. McCormick of Lumberton. She is survived by a sister, Sarah Britt of Lumberton, and two brothers, Malcolm McCormick of Flat Rock, NC and Duncan McCormick of Raleigh, NC, as well as several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial service will be held at a later date. The family is being served by McNeill Mackie Funeral Home Saint Pauls.
