While serving, he was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation, Southwest Asia Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, Navy Good Conduct Award (twice), Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal and the .45 Caliber Expert Pistol Shot Medal. He taught us everything we know.” His wife, Beth, described him as “a beloved multitalented husband to her for 13 years. During those 13 years, we discovered we were not a conventional married couple, but we were soul mates. We gifted each other throughout the year, making every day a holiday. She went on to say, “ While he was taken from me too soon, the memories, the yard projects and the unlimited number of trinkets around my house, has left me with a deep well of satisfaction that he will continue to live on in the hearts of his friends and family. Richard, you are my world and my best friend. I love you and I miss you.” He inherited 4 children when he married Beth and embraced each one of those as his own. They commented that “Richard was the epitome of what a father is. Not only did he inherit the love of her children, but also the grandchildren that later arrived. He was the great protector, knower of all thing’s cars, who always had a smile of his and joke in heart. He was good, honest and will always be in our hearts. We will love him for the rest of our days.”
