Stephen F. Ammons, 83, of Lumber Bridge, North Carolina died Thursday morning, September 2, 2010 at home.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, September 4, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Lumber Bridge Presbyterian Church Cemetery, the Reverends Gerald Tew and J. Frank Turner officiating. Mr. Ammons was a graduate of Red Springs High School, and Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) in Wilson, NC. He was stationed in the Philippines during World War II. Mr. Ammons retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation. After his retirement, he worked part-time as a substitute rural mail carrier in Lumber Bridge for several years.
Mr. Ammons was an active member of Lumber Bridge Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, and was chairman of the board deacons for many years. He also served as the Sunday School Director and sang in the adult choir for many decades. He was an active member of the Lumber Bridge Volunteer Fire Department and the Lumber Bridge Community Choir for many years. He also served on the Lumber Bridge Town Board and the Board of Directors for the Third Century Water Corporation.
Mr. Ammons was a son of the late Colon J. and Amelia Powers Ammons. He is survived by his wife, Mary Prevatt Ammons of the home, a daughter, Wanda Ammons of Lumber Bridge, a son, Stephen R. Ammons and his wife, Helen, of Clarksville, Virginia, and two grandsons, Russell of Raleigh, NC and Cory of Clarksville, VA. He is also survived by his brother, Colon J. Ammons and his wife, Peggy, of Lumber Bridge.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday September 3, 2010 at McNeill Mackie Funeral Home, 319 W. Broad St., St. Pauls, NC.
